Materials Exchange Certificate Program
Since 2008, NYC MEDP implemented the city’s first ever Materials Exchange Certificate Program, a 21-hour certificate program eight interactive training workshops, designed to assist reuse professionals in developing, expanding or improving their programs.
The series includes the following workshops:
• Goal Setting & Effective Planning
• Board Development & Volunteer Management
• Marketing Skills
• Taxes, Risk, & Liability
• Budgeting & Fundraising Skills
• Warehousing & Logistics
• Secondhand Retail Management
• Program Evaluation & Reporting Success

In 2011, the MECP was adopted by the City College of New York's Office of Continuing and Professional Studies. While offered to the public and non-members, a limited number of spaces are available to members of NYC MEDP, for free. Goal

The goal of the NYC Materials Exchange Certificate Program is to support reuse organizations more effectively and provides Reuse Sector Members an opportunity to:

  • Invest in Leadership: by increasing the capacity of reuse sector staff to provide the kind of training and technical assistance that make them more effective leaders, both in their communities as managers of volunteers and in their agencies as professionals skilled in the areas of strategic thinking, marketing, fundraising, and program development.

  • Improve Operations: through the sharing of knowledge among during skilled training workshops and peer-to-peer discussion opportunities (list serve, conference calls, etc).

  • Increase Sustainability: by laying the groundwork for long-term systemic change, this program creates new partnerships that build the leadership and volunteer base to grow strong reuse sector programming in new communities. It will also serve as a training and retention tools that may help participants decrease staff and volunteer turnover.

Summary The Materials Exchange Certificate Program (MECP) consists of eight interactive training workshops to assist reuse professionals and organizations in developing, expanding and improving their programs. MECP is available at no cost to NYC MEDP members, through the City College of New York's Office of Continuing and Professional Studies.
